I have sur­pris­ingly been receiv­ing quite a few emails regard­ing nat­ural skin care prod­ucts. So I decided to wran­gle up my Top 10 Favorite Nat­ural Skin & Hair Care Prod­ucts — and nooo, I’m not paid or spon­sored by any of them.

1. 100% Pure. With such a deli­cious med­ley of fruit enzyme scrubs, lotions with mouth-watering scents like “Dark Choco­late Mocha” and “Honey Almond,” and lus­cious body washes with equally yummy fla­vors, who could resist? Most impor­tant, their line is incred­i­bly clean and free of sneaky, unfriendly ingre­di­ents. A few of their prod­ucts (I believe it is just their body washes) con­tain less than 0.1% potas­sium sor­bate, a food-grade salt preser­v­a­tive that pre­vents fer­men­ta­tion. This is an accept­able preser­v­a­tive, as it presents no car­cino­genic risk and is water sol­u­ble, so it is not stored in our bod­ies. Plus, their cus­tomer ser­vice is a dream and their owner, Susie Wang, comes across very gen­uine and car­ing (and appar­ently she’s going to start a nat­ural cloth­ing line soon — that’s going to be awe­some!). Oh oh, P.S. their facial mois­tur­iz­ers (love their Aqua Boost Hydrate Serum) will leave you with baby soft skin. 100% Pure is 100% Amaz­ing (cheesy, but so true).

2. Talu­lah. I am fairly new to this brand, but I’m already in love with their home­spun view on beauty and the truly 100% nat­ural ingre­di­ents that go with it. Their founder/CEO, Nicole, is an estheti­cian and herbal­ist who for­mu­lates every prod­uct in the Talu­lah line. Every­thing from their lux­u­ri­ous cleansers to their nour­ish­ing facial masks have pure plant ingre­di­ents and home­o­pathics that ben­e­fit a vari­ety of skin types and relieve numer­ous com­plaints. One of their pop­u­lar prod­ucts is the Vanilla Bean Reju­ve­nat­ing Cleanser, made with organic sugar and jas­mine rice for beau­ti­fully pol­ished, blemish-free skin. 3. Evan Healy. “The skin breathes” is their tagline and the under­tone to this entire line. The result­ing for­mu­la­tions are light, yet supremely nour­ish­ing and effec­tive. Dur­ing one win­ter, I had ungodly dry skin and per­sisent red dry patches on my cheeks and chin (awe­some, I know), and Evan’s Rose Cleans­ing Milk was my sav­ior, swiftly replac­ing my irri­tated skin cells with fresh, happy new ones in a mat­ter of days. Their Rose­hip Treat­ment Facial Serum is another beauty, made entirely of pure organic seed and essen­tial oils to repair and soothe del­i­cate, dry skin.

4. Suki Pure. This is one line I have been watch­ing since its incep­tion, and the company’s owner, Suki (go fig­ure), is clearly a pas­sion­ate indi­vid­ual with a good help­ing of integrity. Her skin care prod­ucts are con­sis­tently held to high stan­dards and as a result, they have received many pos­i­tive reviews and awards. One of their most customer-acclaimed prod­ucts is the Exfo­li­ate Foam­ing Cleanser, a deli­cious daily skin treat made with lemon­grass, rice, and organic sugar attrib­uted to clear­ing blem­ishes and keep­ing the skin soft and youth­ful. Over­all, a great line to try.

6. Liv­ing Nature. An amaz­ing, com­plete line from New Zealand — and if you’re a guy in need of a qual­ity, nat­ural shav­ing cream and after­shave, look no fur­ther! Their ingre­di­ents are impres­sive, their line is exten­sive, and they have some­thing superb and effec­tive for every­one. I can’t wait to try their Bal­anc­ing Sham­poo, made with Manuka honey, mead­ow­foam, coconut oil, and vit­a­min E (but at $20 for just 6.7 ounces, the price is a wee bit steeper than I’m used to with other nat­ural, organic lines).

7. John Mas­ters Organ­ics. If you’re like me and enjoy treat­ing your hair to the same nat­ural, Nature-loving elixirs you put on your skin, then give this line a try. Their Herbal Cider Hair Clar­i­fier and alcohol-free Sweet Orange & Silk Pro­tein Styling Gel are absolute all-stars, while the rest of his hair­care line shines just as bright. Cruelty-free, organic, and made with top notch ingre­di­ents that make your hair look and feel won­der­ful — could you really ask for any­thing more?

8. Intel­li­gent Nutri­ents. Oh my, what a beau­ti­ful, well-crafted line this is. While their pric­ing is pretty steep, one can’t deny the qual­ity, purity, and effec­tive­ness this hair and skin care line pro­vides. And because each prod­uct is for­mu­lated with com­pletely nat­ural (and tech­ni­cally edi­ble) ingre­di­ents, you can use many of them in mul­ti­ple ways — Organic Fin­ish­ing Gloss for your hair only? Nay! You can use it as a mas­sage oil or after­shave as well. And a lit­tle piece of trivia for you: IN’s founder and pas­sion­ate herbal­ist is Horst Rechel­bacher, founder of Aveda, one of the orig­i­nal nat­ural prod­uct lines many of us came to love (Aveda was sold to Estee Lauder in 1997 and is, unfor­tu­nately, being turned into the usual main­stream chemical-filled crap).

9. Real Purity. Okay, so their web­site is the exact oppo­site of good or pretty (God, how I would love to redo their site — awe­some com­pa­nies need awe­some web­sites, and that kinda thing gets me all antsy), their prod­ucts are as nat­ural, sim­ple, and lovely as it gets. Vir­ginia Jenk­ins, RP’s owner, is richly involved in her prod­ucts’ for­mu­la­tion and even for­mu­lated one of the first nat­ural mas­caras on the mar­ket. Their Sen­si­tive Hair Spray is a dream come true, pro­vid­ing glo­ri­ous, shine-enhancing nutri­ents (all com­pletely alcohol-free!) to your mane — it’s not your typ­i­cal icky sticky hair spray. I love how afford­able their prod­ucts are, and you can give every­thing a shot by buy­ing sam­ples for only a few bucks. I am excited to try their Misty Facial Spray (a min­eral rich arte­sian water mist for the skin) and a few of their cos­met­ics for my upcom­ing cos­met­ics reviews videos and posts. This should be great!

10. Sun­coat. This kinda makes me gig­gle because I reg­u­larly mis­pro­nounce and mis­spell it Sungoat, but truth­fully, that is part of the grand appeal to me. This line is all sugar, spice, and every­thig nice — quite lit­er­ally! Their nat­ural hair care prod­ucts are sugar-based and sen­sa­tional, pro­vid­ing supe­rior hold, shine, and man­age­abil­ity to your hair. They are an unde­ni­ably won­der­ful alter­na­tive to the usual chemicals.

Choose the perfect color for your skin is an art and you must remember that it will always depend on the natural color of your hair and skin tone.

Remember these tips for selecting hair color, more compatible with your skin tone is:

- If your skin is dark or olive uses darker colors of hair.

- If your skin tends to yellow, use dark colors like rich mahogany.

- For skins pink, neutral tones are recommended as sandy or beige blonde or chocolate brown. Avoid reds or golden tones.

- If you’re brown, but with dark eyes, give life to your hair reddish violet. Nothing brown for you, because there will be no contrast.

Hair curlers I find are probably the next easiest method to get the head of curls you desire. This entails applying curlers to your entire head or parts you want curled and leave in for desired time. Use smaller rollers on shorter hair and the larger ones on medium to long hair. Take them out and your are done. Best way to keep the curls all day is to lightly spray with holding product while curlers are still in and just gently finger comb. Here hair curling products work best.

Curling irons give to better control over where and how much curl you want. Also, if you are looking to keep up with the trends like crimping or spiral curls or the newer fancy styles you can get a special attachment. * Curling irons with rechargeable battery are great not just for travel but at home.
* Look for a curling iron with a protective case that is heat resistant. I find this a great place to put my iron right after I’m done even if it is still hot and I do not have to worry about my kids or me touching it.
* If you have medium to long hair with bangs, purchase a curler with at least 2 different size attachments. Use the smaller barrel for shorter hair and the larger one for back and sides. With just a small curling barrel it will take you forever.

Hair Curling Tips:

* If you get a perm you must keep you hair well moisturized. Use a conditioner every time you shampoo and even a leave-in condition is a good idea since curly hair tends to be dry. Use a deep conditioner or conditioning mask at least once a week.
* Always use curling irons on dry and clean hair. The hot curling iron on damp hair opens the cuticle and damages the cortex.
* Hold curling iron for about 10 seconds or as recommended and gently remove. Do not comb hair after but just use your fingers to loosen.
* A natural way to get a head of soft waves is to braid your hair when wet and let it fully dry that way. Or you can braid your hair when dry and just leave the braids overnight. Undo braids and gently comb with your fingers and presto – gorgeous waves.

Permanent Hair Straighteners also known as chemical hair straightening have become very popular as recent styles of pin straight hair are the in thing.
This technology was developed in Japan where straight hair, is desired by most women. This process is generally called Japanese Thermal Hair Straightening but in the US, Canada & UK it is also referred to as Chemically Straighten Hair, Chinese hair Straightening, Japanese Thermal Reconditioning, Ionic Retexturizing, Japanese straight perm, Thermal Reconstruction, and Rebonding. If you have used a relaxer on your hair in the past you should not chemically straighten hair as these two processes are not compatible and you may see breakage or fall out. Also, be sure to inform your stylist about other processes like bleaching, color, highlights etc. that you have used in the recent past. The best way to make sure you are a good candidate for this process is to have your stylist do a strand test. Actually your stylist should be the one to suggest this if they are professional and and experienced and are looking to get you the best results. Although straightening can be done on colored hair, be sure to follow general guidelines of waiting two weeks or more before and after.

If you do decide to go ahead with permanent hair straighteners remember that hair straightened by this process will keep your hair looking smooth and shiny for six to nine months depending on your hair growth rate. Therefore the 4 to 6 hours (depending on hair length) it takes for the process is definitely worth it. You may also think that the cost of $500-$800 for a good experienced stylist is worth it as it will cut down on daily styling time for many months. I will caution you to use only shampoos and conditioners recommended for your new shiny mane. Primarily you will need deeper conditioning, maybe even leave-in conditioners, and styling products with sunscreen.

I have many friends that swear by Japanese Thermal Hair Straightening and have not personally heard any horror stories. I myself am considering it but am still mulling it over. One thing to remember is that permanent means that by straightening curly hair you will not be able to have any curls or waves no curling iron will work. So it is a commitment for over six months so choose wisely.

Tips

* Never wrap the cord around the dryer as it may fray or damage cord causing a hazard. Of course a retractable cord is ideal and would eliminate this problem.
* Make sure to clean the hair dryer often, Too much lint or stray hairs can block airflow and cause the dryer to overheat. I prefer dryers that have a removable lint catcher for easy cleaning. Back when they did not have this option, I would use a vacuum.
* Try to give your hair a break from blow drying at least one a week. Even with today’s technology, heat is still damaging to your hair to some degree.

Natural Hair Products have been used for many, many years and by ancient societies.Indians still use herbs like neem, shikakai, henna, bael, brahmi, aloe combined with things like sandalwood, jasmine, turmeric, and rose formulate shampoos and other hair products. Natural hair products are now starting to become more popular as people realize that anytime you use a product on your body some of it will get absorbed. They are particularly popular with pregnant women who do not want to pass on the chemicals to the unborn fetus. Natural hair products are available more easily now but are more expensive therefore you may want to home from scratch.

There are many recipes to be found online just by searching for “natural hair product recipes”. Also, if you are one that does not like the fuss and are not attached to using a whole array of styling products, natural products are definitely for you. Natural hair care includes the use of natural hair conditioner and other natural hair treatments but it does not include the use of tools like straighteners or curling irons. Tips & Natural Hair Treatments

* Use coconut oil or jojoba oil as a hair conditioner. Be sure to rinse completely and with cool water.
* To tame a frizzy mane or to reduce static, put a couple of drops of olive oil in your hand and pull it through from roots to ends.
* Any of the above oils can be used as a deep conditioner. Put it on all your hair and scalp, cover with a plastic shower cap (for heat) and wrap with a towel. Let it penetrate for 20-30 mins & rinse.

Daily conditioners are good for hair maintenance and for detangling. But deep hair conditioners are vital for problem hair.They moisture and strengthen and make hair more manageable, The worse shape your hair is in and the more damage you have, the more often you should use this product. For most people with “normal” hair deep conditioning a couple of times a month should be sufficient. But if you happen to have unruly and dry hair like I do, use it at least once a week. Leave it in for 15-20 minutes with a plastic cap on top so the heat can penetrate. For really curly, permed, straightened or relaxed hair or if you blow dry your hair every day, a deep conditioner for hair is a must.

Also, because my mane is very hard to manage, I use leave-in conditioners which provide all day moisture to my hair just like face moisturizer would to your face. Try one with sunscreen if you are out in the sun a lot. You can find ones that you apply while your hair is wet and there are others to use on dry hair. A weightless pre-styling leave-in conditioner can also prepare your hair for styling. Typically leave-in conditioners add shine and control frizz without weighing down hair. Leave-in conditioners work great in a pinch to tame a big frizzy mess while you are out and about.

Just remember moisturized hair always looks and feels healthier and sexier!!

Tips

* You can also use things in your own home as deep moisturizers. Mayonnaise works real well and so do eggs. Just be sure to rinse real well with cool water, not hot or warm water.
* Coconut oil or jojoba oil can also be used as a natural deep conditioner. If you have oily hair to use it only on the ends of your hair.

Shampoo is a probably the most common hair care product used to clean hair.It basically removes oils, dirt, styling products and other pollutants from the exterior of the hair and scalp. If not formulated correctly, shampoo can strip your hair and scalp of too much of the natural oils. This is another reason it is not recommended you use regular soap for cleaning your hair as soap is made to bond with and remove natural oils.

Shampoos, especially those, made for daily use are formulated so that they are mild on the hair and don’t leave it too dry. Shampoo to treat dandruff, which is considered a medical condition, is regulated just like other over the counter drugs. Baby shampoos are made to mirror the pH of the human eye so they do not irritate the eye during bathing. You can also get the double formula hair shampoo and conditioner all in one which is supposed to clean and condition at the same time. Then you have the shampoos geared to your type of hair: shampoo for oily hair, dry hair shampoo, hair loss shampoo, shampoo for thinning hair and of course healthy hair shampoo. But it gets more complicated now. You can get shampoos geared towards the result you want, There are shampoos that volumize, moisturize, strengthen, purify (not sure what that means), anti-frizz, color enhancing (specific for blonds, brunettes & redheads), gray hair shampoo and more recently ones for restoring and time renewal.

Tips

* Always shampoo wet hair.
* Take a small amount of shampoo and rub it in your hands first and work through your hair. Do not pour it right on your head.
* Lather, massage and rinse. Remember lots of suds does not necessarily mean it is doing a better job. Do make sure you rinse it out completely.
* Shampoo, Rinse, Repeat. This is a myth. Repeating will not get your hair cleaner; you will just use twice the amount of shampoo.
* You do not need to shampoo every day, specially if your hair is dry. In this case every other day just wet your hair and use conditioner.
* Which one to pick? All shampoo cost pennies to make. The extras are just branding and perfumes. Try one of the drugstore shampoos first before you invest upwards of $20 for a fancy shampoo.
* If you are using a special thickening shampoo be sure to use an anti-residue shampoo once a week. Thickening shampoos work by depositing product to adhere to your hair so it just looks thicker.
